Rose Memorial Garden
Our society maintains the Rose Memorial Garden at Bellevue Park in Sault Ste. Marie. The garden has several displays with engraved brass plaques in memory of loved ones who have passed away. For $20, you can order a plaque set (one with the loved one’s name and one with the donor’s name), and we will mount them on one of the displays. We have a similar “tribute” display honouring retirements, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.
Forest Heights Community Garden
In 2003, our society and six partner organizations were successful in receiving funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to establish the Allard Street Community Garden at 105 Allard Street, on land next to the Canadian Red Cross Building. This garden has been a growing concern for many happy Sault gardeners ever since! In 2016 the Garden was packed up for the winter and re-opened in the Spring of 2017 at the new location.
City Beautification Program
Sault Ste. Marie’s City Beautification Program promotes and encourages community pride by recognizing excellence in landscape design, maintenance and effort to beautify properties making a positive contribution to the community.
The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society sponsors the Best Vegetable Garden Award. Any garden producing seasonal vegetables, fruits or herbs may be entered. Gardens are judged on design, overall health, range and productivity as well as creativity and general tidiness.
Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site
The Horticultural Society has a group of members who use a greenhouse at this historic site to start their annual flowers and vegetables each spring. In return for the use of the greenhouse, this group grows extra flowers to help beautify the canal site. If you’d like more information about the canal greenhouse initiative, please contact Margaret Carruthers or Molly McQuarrie at email@example.com.
